Games and recreation are part of the daily schedule at Tamarac Senior Center, a licensed adult day center in Broward County. Members take part in group games, crafts, music, and shared activities in a supervised setting, guided by staff throughout the day. These activities are not filler between meals. They give members regular chances to think, use their hands, and spend time with other people, which are the reasons many adults come to a day program in the first place.

What is included

  • Bingo. A regular group favorite that brings members together, keeps attention focused, and gives everyone a shared game to follow.
  • Card games. Familiar card games played in small groups, from casual hands to steady regular tables.
  • Dominoes. A well-known game across many of our members, and a common way that people who speak different languages end up at the same table.
  • Puzzles. Jigsaw and word puzzles that members can work on alone or in a small group at their own pace.
  • Crafts. Hands-on projects that use fine motor skills and give members something they made to take home.
  • Music. Music sessions and sing-alongs, often built around songs members already know, in both English and Spanish.
  • Celebrations. Birthdays, holidays, and seasonal events that mark the calendar and give the group something to look forward to together.

Who it is for

Games and recreation are open to every member of the day program, adults 60 and older who spend the day at the center. Members join based on what interests them. Someone who likes to stay social can spend the day at the bingo and domino tables, while someone who prefers a quieter activity can work on a puzzle or a craft. Because about 70 percent of our members speak Spanish, activities are run in both English and Spanish, and many games work well no matter which language a member speaks. No skill or experience is needed to take part.

Why it matters

Regular activity is one of the main reasons families choose a day program instead of leaving a parent home alone during the day. Group games and puzzles give members ongoing cognitive stimulation, keeping the mind active through problem solving, memory, and attention. Shared activities also drive engagement. A person who plays cards or joins a sing-along is talking with others and staying part of a group, rather than spending the day without contact. And the activities are meant to be enjoyed. Members take part because the games are genuinely fun, and that enjoyment is what keeps them coming back and staying involved.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do members have to join the activities?
No. Activities are offered throughout the day, and members choose what they want to take part in. Some members join every game, and others prefer quieter options like puzzles or crafts. Staff encourage participation but never require it.
Can someone who mostly speaks Spanish still take part?
Yes. About 70 percent of our members speak Spanish, and activities are run in both English and Spanish. Many games, including dominoes, cards, and bingo, work well regardless of which language a member speaks, so no one is left out.
