Social and health programs are the core of the day at Tamarac Senior Center. Each day follows a schedule of group activities led by staff, with time for exercise, wellness education, conversation, and recreation. The goal is straightforward: keep members active, engaged, and connected with other people during the hours they are at the center. This page explains what these programs include, who they are for, and why regular social and health activity matters for adults 60 and older.

What is included

  • Group programs. Scheduled group activities that bring members together, including games, recreation, and light exercise sessions built around movement and mobility for older adults.
  • Wellness education. Health and wellness sessions that share practical information on staying active, eating well, and managing daily health, presented in plain terms in both English and Spanish.
  • Social engagement. Time set aside for conversation, shared meals, and group activities so members interact with others through the day rather than spending it alone.
  • Health-focused sessions. Activities designed around physical and mental wellness, from guided exercise and stretching to programs that keep the mind engaged, all within a supervised environment.

Who it is for

These programs are for adults 60 and older who benefit from a structured daytime setting with staff present and other members around. That often includes a parent who is home alone while adult children work, a senior who no longer drives and has fewer chances to get out, or someone who is managing ongoing health needs and does well with routine and supervision. The program is bilingual, and about 70 percent of members speak Spanish, so participants can take part comfortably in English or Spanish. Free door to door transportation is included, so getting to and from the center is not a barrier to attending.

Why it matters

Isolation is common among older adults, especially those who live alone or have stopped driving. Long stretches of time spent alone are linked to declines in both mood and cognitive health. Regular social contact and mental activity work in the other direction. Spending the day in a group, taking part in conversation, activities, and wellness sessions, gives members consistent engagement and a reason to stay active. A predictable daily routine with people around also gives families a clear picture of how a parent is spending the day, in a setting where staff are present and meals are provided.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do members have to join every activity?
No. The program has a daily schedule, but participation is up to each member. Some take part in most activities, while others prefer to join a few and rest or socialize the rest of the time. Staff are present throughout the day either way.
Are the programs offered in Spanish as well as English?
Yes. Tamarac Senior Center is a bilingual program, and about 70 percent of members speak Spanish. Group activities, wellness education, and health sessions are offered in both English and Spanish so members can take part comfortably.
