Medicare will not cover it. Here is what actually does — and the programs most families never hear about.
Once a family decides adult day care is the right move, the next question arrives immediately: who pays for it. Figuring out how to pay for adult day care in Florida is where a lot of Broward County families stall, usually because they check Medicare, find nothing, and assume that is the end of the road.
It is not. There are seven realistic funding routes in Florida, and most families qualify for at least one. This guide walks through each of them, what it actually covers, and where to apply.
Some context before the funding, because the number surprises people in a good way.
Adult day care is generally the least expensive supervised care option per hour, largely because meals, activities, supervision and often transportation are bundled into one day rather than billed separately. For a fuller breakdown see our guide to the cost of adult day care in Broward County.

This is the single biggest source of confusion, so it is worth being direct: Medicare does not cover adult day care. Not Part A, not Part B. Medicare pays for medical treatment, not for custodial or supervisory care, and adult day care is classified as the latter.
Two things people confuse it with:
1. Florida Medicaid Long-Term Care (SMMC-LTC). The main route. Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care program covers adult day health care along with case management, homemaker services, respite and personal care. Requires meeting a nursing-facility level of care plus income and asset limits. Details below.
2. VA benefits. Veterans and in some cases surviving spouses have several routes, including VA Adult Day Health Care through Geriatrics and Extended Care, Veteran-Directed Care, and the Aid and Attendance pension supplement. Details below.
3. Older Americans Act funding. Federal funds distributed through Florida's Area Agencies on Aging can subsidize adult day services for older adults who do not qualify for Medicaid. In Broward County this runs through the Aging and Disability Resource Center. Funding is limited and there can be a waiting list, so apply early.
4. Long-term care insurance. If your parent bought an LTC policy years ago, check it. Most modern policies cover adult day care, and many people forget they hold one, or assume it only pays for nursing homes. Read the benefit triggers and the elimination period carefully.
5. Private pay, often shared between siblings. Many families split the cost. Because adult day care is priced per day, families can also start at two or three days a week and increase later, which makes it far more manageable than an all-or-nothing arrangement.
6. Tax relief. Adult day care expenses may be deductible as a medical expense if the care is primarily for medical reasons and your parent qualifies as your dependent. Separately, the Child and Dependent Care Credit can apply if the care enables you to work and your parent meets the qualifying-individual test. These are genuinely worth exploring, but the rules are specific — talk to a tax professional about your situation rather than relying on a blog.
7. Program-level assistance. Some centers offer sliding-scale arrangements or can point you toward local subsidies and community resources. It costs nothing to ask, and the answer is sometimes better than families expect.
Regular Florida Medicaid on its own does not pay for adult day care. The benefit comes through the long-term care program, and it has three separate gates.
Your parent must be assessed as needing a nursing-facility level of care. This is about function — help with bathing, dressing, eating, mobility, toileting, or supervision needs from cognitive decline. It does not mean they must actually be in a nursing home; it means they would otherwise qualify to be.
For 2026, a single applicant generally faces an income limit around $2,901 per month and a countable asset limit of about $2,000. Important nuances:
Apply through the Florida Department of Children and Families for financial eligibility, with the care assessment handled through the state's aging network. Because enrollment in the long-term care program can involve a wait, getting on the list early matters even if you are not ready to start.

This is the most under-used route in Broward County, which has a large veteran population. There are three distinct paths and they are often confused with each other.
Start with the VA medical center's social work team, or a County Veterans Service Officer, who can help file at no cost. Be aware that Aid and Attendance applications commonly take several months, so start before you need the money.

You do not have to work this out alone, and you should not pay someone to tell you what these organizations will explain for free:

Because every family's funding situation is different, the fastest way to get a real answer is to call us at (954) 694-1100 and tell us your circumstances. We can talk through which routes are worth pursuing in your case.
No. Original Medicare, meaning Part A and Part B, does not cover adult day care because it is classified as custodial rather than skilled medical care. Some Medicare Advantage plans have begun offering supplemental benefits that may include adult day services or caregiver support, but this varies significantly by plan and year. Call the number on your plan card and ask specifically. Medicaid, which is a different program, does cover adult day health care in Florida through its long-term care program.
For a single applicant in 2026, the income limit is generally around $2,901 per month with a countable asset limit of about $2,000. The home your parent lives in and one vehicle are generally not counted. Rules for married couples are more generous and protect income and assets for the spouse remaining at home. If income exceeds the limit, Florida allows a Qualified Income Trust, also called a Miller Trust, which is a common and legitimate solution. Your parent must also be assessed as needing a nursing-facility level of care.
Yes, through several routes. Enrolled veterans may access VA Adult Day Health Care through Geriatrics and Extended Care, or Veteran-Directed Care, which provides a flexible budget the veteran controls. Separately, the Aid and Attendance pension supplement pays cash that can be applied to any care, reaching roughly $2,424 per month for a single wartime veteran in 2026, with surviving spouses eligible at a lower rate. Start with the VA social work team or a County Veterans Service Officer, who can help file at no cost.
It varies. Financial determination through the Department of Children and Families and the care-level assessment happen on separate tracks, and enrollment in the long-term care program can involve a waiting period depending on demand and priority score. Because of that, families are usually advised to begin the process before care becomes urgent. Getting screened and placed on the list early costs nothing and can save months later.
It can be. Adult day care may qualify as a deductible medical expense if the care is primarily for medical reasons and your parent meets the dependency requirements. Separately, the Child and Dependent Care Credit may apply if the care allows you to work and your parent qualifies as a dependent unable to care for themselves. The eligibility rules are specific and depend on your household situation, so confirm with a tax professional rather than assuming either applies.
Private pay is still often more affordable than families expect, particularly because adult day care is billed per day. Many families start with two or three days a week rather than five, split the cost between siblings, and increase days later if needed. It is also worth contacting the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County, since Older Americans Act funding is aimed specifically at older adults who do not qualify for Medicaid.
